Frequently Asked Questions
Chemical Peel Basics
-
A chemical peel is a professional skin treatment that applies a carefully formulated solution to the skin, causing the outermost damaged or dead layers to shed and revealing fresher, healthier skin underneath. Chemical peels are used to treat the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands for a range of concerns including hyperpigmentation, acne scars, fine lines, sun damage, and melasma.
At Urban Allure in Oakland, we use SkinMedica professional chemical peels — a medical-grade line formulated for a range of skin types and concerns, administered by our California-licensed Registered Nurses.
-
A facial is a non-clinical treatment focused on surface cleansing, hydration, and relaxation — typically performed by an esthetician. A chemical peel is a medical-grade skin treatment that actively resurfaces the skin using chemical exfoliants to address specific concerns like hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and sun damage. Chemical peels produce deeper, more corrective results than a facial and require licensed medical oversight. At Urban Allure, all chemical peels are administered by California-licensed Registered Nurses.

Urban Allure offers three SkinMedica professional peel options:
Illuminize Peel® — Mild. For first-time peel clients with mild skin concerns. No to minimal downtime
Vitalize Peel® — Mild to moderate. Our most popular peel. Effective for hyperpigmentation, acne, melasma, and fine lines. Two to five days of peeling.
Rejuvenize Peel™ — Moderate to deep. The strongest SkinMedica peel. For more significant hyperpigmentation, deeper acne scars, and pronounced sun damage. Three to seven days of peeling.
Your RN will recommend the most appropriate peel for your skin type, tone, and concerns at your complimentary consultation.
Peel Selection
-
The right peel depends on your skin type, tone, and the specific concern you want to address:
First-time peel patient or mild concerns → Illuminize Peel
Hyperpigmentation, acne, melasma, or fine lines → Vitalize Peel
Moderate to significant hyperpigmentation, deeper acne scars, or significant sun damage → Rejuvenize Peel
No downtime required → Illuminize Peel or PRX Derm Perfexion
Your RN will conduct a thorough skin assessment at your complimentary consultation and make a specific recommendation based on your Fitzpatrick skin type, your goals, and your lifestyle.
-
Yes. SkinMedica peels are formulated for a range of skin types and Fitzpatrick skin tones. Your RN will assess your skin tone and recommend the safest peel depth for your complexion. For clients with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI), the Illuminize or Vitalize Peel is typically recommended first before progressing to deeper peel levels. The Rejuvenize Peel and TCA peels require more caution with darker skin tones and are prescribed only after an in-person assessment.
-
Both chemical peels and PRX Derm Perfexion use TCA as an active ingredient — but they produce very different effects. A traditional chemical peel causes controlled exfoliation and visible surface peeling. PRX Derm Perfexion uses a patented TCA 33% formula that stimulates deep collagen production without any surface peeling or photosensitivity — truly zero downtime. PRX is ideal for patients who want skin tightening, melasma improvement, or bio-revitalization without any visible recovery. Chemical peels are better suited for patients seeking active surface correction of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and sun damage.
Chemical Peel Recovery
-
Recovery time depends on the peel depth:
Illuminize Peel: Little to no visible peeling. No downtime. Can return to normal activities immediately.
Vitalize Peel: Mild to moderate peeling for two to five days. Most patients are comfortable returning to work within two to three days with mineral makeup applied
Rejuvenize Peel: Moderate peeling for three to seven days. Some patients prefer to take a few days off social activities during the active peeling phase.
All peels are performed in-office in approximately 30 minutes.
-
For the Vitalize and Rejuvenize Peels, here is a general day-by-day recovery guide:
Day 1–2: Skin may feel tight, dry, and slightly flushed. Some clients notice a darkening or bronzing of the skin — this is normal and indicates the peel is working.
Day 3–4: Peeling begins, typically starting around the mouth and chin and moving outward. Do not pick or pull at peeling skin.
Day 5–7: Peeling continues and completes. Skin underneath appears brighter, smoother, and more even.
Day 7+: Full results become visible as the skin finishes healing. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is essential throughout and after recovery.
-
After the Illuminize Peel, makeup can typically be worn the same day. After the Vitalize and Rejuvenize Peels, we recommend waiting until active peeling has subsided before applying makeup — usually three to five days. Mineral makeup is preferred during the recovery period as it is less irritating to sensitized skin. Your RN will provide specific post-care guidance at your appointment.
-
After a chemical peel, avoid: sun exposure and tanning for at least two weeks (daily SPF is mandatory); picking or pulling at peeling skin; retinoids, exfoliating acids, and active skincare until peeling is complete; heat including hot yoga, saunas, and steam rooms for one week. Full post-care instructions are available on our Pre & Post Care Instructions page.
-
Yes. Chemical peels are one of the most effective treatments for hyperpigmentation — including sun spots, post-acne marks, and uneven skin tone. The Vitalize and Rejuvenize Peels are specifically formulated to accelerate cell turnover and break up excess melanin, resulting in a more even complexion over a series of treatments.
-
Yes. Chemical peels stimulate skin cell renewal and help reduce the appearance of acne scars — particularly superficial rolling scars and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. For deeper or pitted acne scars, combining a chemical peel series with SkinPen microneedling can produce enhanced results. Ask your RN about combination treatment planning at your consultation.
-
Chemical peels can help with melasma, but treatment requires careful selection of peel depth and skin type assessment. Melasma is hormonally driven and can be worsened by incorrect peel selection or sun exposure post-treatment. The Vitalize Peel is typically the safest starting point for melasma. For patients who cannot accommodate any downtime, PRX Derm Perfexion is an effective alternative. Your RN will recommend the most appropriate approach at your consultation.
-
TCA (trichloroacetic acid) is one of the active ingredients in the SkinMedica Rejuvenize Peel — the strongest peel in Urban Allure's peel menu. TCA penetrates more deeply than alpha hydroxy acid peels and is effective for correcting hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and sun damage. Urban Allure also offers PRX Derm Perfexion, which uses a patented TCA 33% formula with zero downtime and no surface peeling.
Chemical Peel for Specific Concerns
Pricing & Scheduling
-
Chemical peel pricing at Urban Allure depends on the peel depth (Illuminize, Vitalize, or Rejuvenize) and the number of sessions in your treatment plan. Starting-from rates are listed on our price list page. Series pricing is available — ask your RN about package pricing for a peel series at your consultation.
-
Most patients achieve their best results after a series of three to six peel treatments spaced three to four weeks apart, depending on the peel depth and the concern being treated. Your RN will recommend a specific plan based on your skin assessment at your first appointment.
-
The Illuminize Peel can be performed every two weeks. The Vitalize Peel is typically scheduled every three to four weeks. The Rejuvenize Peel is scheduled every four to six weeks to allow for full skin recovery between sessions.
