Laser hair removal works by directing concentrated pulses of light energy into the hair follicle. The pigment in the follicle absorbs the light, which converts to heat and permanently damages the follicle's ability to produce hair, without affecting the surrounding skin.

Laser hair removal delivers permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. After a full treatment series, most clients achieve 70–90% reduction in hair growth in the treated area. Some hair regrowth may occur over time as hormones fluctuate, which can be managed with occasional maintenance sessions.

Laser hair removal only targets follicles in the active growth phase (anagen). At any given time, only a portion of your follicles are in this phase, which is why multiple sessions spaced across the full hair growth cycle are needed to achieve comprehensive permanent reduction. Most clients need six to eight sessions to treat all follicles in the target area.

Session spacing depends on the treatment area and your individual hair growth cycle:
• Face (upper lip, chin): every four weeks
• Body (underarms, bikini, Brazilian): every four to six weeks
• Legs, back, chest: every six to eight weeks

Laser Hair Removal for Different Skin Tones & Hair Types

Yes, at Urban Allure. We use the GentleMax Pro with the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which is specifically designed for safe and effective treatment on darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI). The Nd:YAG wavelength bypasses melanin in the skin and targets the hair follicle directly, dramatically reducing the risk of hyperpigmentation or burns on darker skin.
Not all laser systems offer this capability. It is one of the primary reasons East Bay clients with deeper skin tones choose Urban Allure for laser hair removal over other providers.

Laser hair removal is most effective on dark, coarse hair because the laser targets pigment (melanin) in the follicle. Blonde, red, white, and grey hair contain little to no melanin and do not respond well to laser hair removal. During your consultation, your RN will assess your hair color and texture and provide an honest recommendation about expected results.

Fine or thin hair responds less predictably to laser hair removal than coarse, dark hair. Results are possible but may require more sessions and may achieve lower overall reduction rates. Your RN will assess your hair type during your consultation and provide realistic expectations for your specific hair.

Most clients achieve significant permanent reduction in the Brazilian area after six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. The Brazilian area responds well to laser treatment due to the typically coarse, dark hair in that region. Occasional annual maintenance sessions may be needed to manage any hormonal regrowth.

Laser hair removal is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by standard health insurance. However, some HSA and FSA plans may allow laser hair removal for specific medical indications such as folliculitis or PCOS. Check with your HSA/FSA administrator to confirm eligibility before your appointment.
Laser Hair Removal Before & After Treatment

Before your laser hair removal appointment: shave the treatment area 24–48 hours before your session (do not wax, thread, or pluck these remove the follicle the laser needs to target); avoid sun exposure, tanning, and self-tanner for four weeks prior; discontinue retinoids and exfoliating acids on the treatment area for one week prior. The GentleMax Pro includes an integrated Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) that sprays a cryogen cooling mist before each laser pulse significantly reducing discomfort. Most clients describe the sensation as a rubber band snap followed by a mild warming feeling. Sensitivity varies by treatment area, the upper lip and bony areas tend to feel more intense than larger body areas.

There is minimal recovery after laser hair removal. The treated area may appear slightly red and feel like a mild sunburn for 24–48 hours. Avoid sun exposure and apply broad-spectrum SPF daily following your session. Hair will shed from treated follicles over the following two to three weeks, this is normal and indicates the treatment worked. Do not wax or pluck between sessions, shaving is the only acceptable method of hair removal between laser appointments.

You will notice hair shedding from treated follicles within two to three weeks of your first session. Significant, visible hair reduction typically becomes apparent after three to four sessions. Final results from a full treatment series are assessed at twelve weeks after the last session.
